Well, May is on the way out as the year progresses ever-onward.  I have a hard time believing how fast the year is going, but then again, I am getting old.  I will be 38 in June.  I have a hard time staring 40 in the eyes.

I have really become a fan of the website Jazz.com.  You would think that I would have found such a website a long time ago, but I only just discovered it.  They have a huge collection of articles and they talk to some of the greatest names in contemporary jazz.  They also spend a lot of time talking about jazz in general, the future of the musical genre and ways to expand where jazz is listened to.

They have a series of articles where they look at twelve “essential” albums  you should have as a fan of jazz in various styles.  They have had twelve essentials for female jazz singers, for example.  They did another one where they looked at rock and roll and jazz musician team-ups.

This week they have an interesting cover story called “How to Build a Jazz Audience.”  One of the things that most jazz radio stations struggle with is finding an audience.  Too many jazz fans are aging, while the younger kids think jazz is old and boring.  They don’t know about the history or about how cool jazz can be.  So, how do you build a jazz audience?

Here in Chicago, there has been such a drawback in jazz audiences that there are almost no jazz stations left anymore.  There is a Smooth Jazz radio station, but no classic jazz except for WDCB. 

The same problem holds true with jazz concerts and concert series.  This article looks at those jazz concert series.  In particular they look at MCGJazz.  So, check it out, read the article, leave a comment and tell the you heard about it here.

The other day I mentioned one of my all-time favorite jazz musicians, Lionel Hampton.  Well, then again, I may just have mentioned the vibes, I reall can’t remember and I am too lazy to look.  Anyway, if you don’t know Lionel Hampton, you are in for a treat.

I am normally a guy who loves horns.  You know that if you have spent any time on this blog.  I tend to like piano next.  Hampton plays neither of those.  No, Lionel played the vibes.

I don’t even know for sure what “vibes” are.  I know it looks like a xylophone, but apparently isn’t the same thing exactly.  I just know that the way Lionel played them, they sounded awesome.  And when you watch him play, he looks like he is having so much damn fun, well it almost makes me want to take lessons.

One of the best songs he ever did was “Flying Home.”  I found a television appearance he and his band made way back in 1957 when they played this song.  Sadly, this is a fairly short version of this song.  If you do a Google search and then search on some CD websites and find some of his recordings, you will find some longer versions that manage to rock even more.  The best thing about it is how it builds to this great finale.

I am not a huge fan of jazz vocals.  For me, the first thing I fell in love with were the horns.  I then grew to like the piano.  At some point, I drifted into the more unique instruments like the vibes.  But there are lots of people who do like the vocals and the vocalists that, in my humble opinion, really stand out are the women.

Yes, I know Sinatra was great, but come on.  What about Mel Torme?  Yeah, sure, nice enough guy and he made appearances on “Night Court” but he was known as the “velvet fog” and you just can’t lend credibility to that.

The website Jazz.com is a great site.  They have people writing articles about everything there.  I hate to have people turn away from my blog, but really folks, if you love jazz, you need to spend some time on their website.  One of their regular features is called “The Dozens.”  These are articles where they analyze, wait for it, twelve of something.

Right now they have an article called “The Dozens: 12 Jazz Divas You Need to Know.” n Not only does the article take a look at some jazz divas you may want to know, it gives recommendations of key albums you should add to your collection. 

Here’s the key, though.  These are not just the old-time jazz divas you probably know.  These are modern day jazz divas.  Yes, you know and love Ella and Billie, but there are women out there singing jazz right now.  This list shows you the ones you should know.

Check it out and then check out the rest of the website.  It’s a great place to spend some time if you love jazz.  You can learn a few things and find some things to add to your collection.
