An Interview with John Scofield
Last week I brought to your attention the website Jazz.com which is a huge online magazine dedicate to jazz music. They produce a regular series of articles that every jazz fan really should check out. Last week, I mentioned their series known as “The Dozens” which brings you the essential twelve of something featuring particular jazz musician or style of jazz.
They also manage to get intervies with some of the biggest names in jazz. This week, I was particularly struck by the interview with jazz guitarist John Scofield. John’s name is another one that you should probably know if you have any interest in jazz, even if you don’t have a particular interest in jazz guitarists.
I have never been a huge fan of jazz guitar, myself. I don’t exactly know why that is. I tend to love the guitar in every other form of music. But something about jazz guitar just makes me yawn and start looking for something with horns in it. To me, jazz will always be about horns and woodwind instruments.
There is no doubt, however, that when it comes to the guitar, John Scofield is one of the best in the jazz world. If you happen to like jazz guitar, you probably already know about him. If you are new to jazz and looking for new things to try and add to your collection, then maybe you want to give Scofield a try and see what you think.
Regardless of your feelings, the article is an interesting one. It gives a great review of Scofield’s past and how he came to be a jazz guitarist while growing up in the 60s listening to rock. It’s also just always interesting to read an interview with one of the modern jazz legends, no matter what you think about his music or the instrument he plays.
