What Love Really is from Buddy Guy
Now that the ridiculously stupid holiday of Valentine’s Day is over and you are all angry and frustrated with how things went and the gifts given it is time to get back to the reality of love. Now that all of your romantic illusion and delusions of romantic dinners and dressing luxuriously and going out late into the night with the lights of some city twinkling before you as you gaze lovingly into each other’s eyes has been shattered, it’s time to spend a few quality moments with the blues.
That’s what the blues is for, you see. It’s not meant to be depressing. Nope, it is meant to be cathartic. It is meant to be the place where you pour your pain and anger and frustration because your man or woman done gone. If your Valentine’s Day went badly enough that they have done gone, then you need yourself a dose of the blues STAT.
For me, the blues is always going to mean Buddy Guy. I love Buddy and the way he plays. He may be singing about the most depressing things in the world, but he always does it with the biggest grin on his face. It is like, all of these years later, he still can’t believe how much fun he’s having and that he’s getting paid to have it. He seems to still get totally lost in the sheer joy of playing music and it’s just infectious.
My favorite tune of his is below. “Baby Please Don’t Leave Me” it’s called from his album “Sweet Tea.” Listen to that guitar, folks. That is what many rock critics would call “blistering.” Plus, it’s what love is really about. It’s about lots of groveling and pleading and begging and hoping that your baby really won’t leave you. It seldom works though, but at least Buddy leaves ‘em satisfied.
