I know that coming to Chicago in January is probably not high on your list of vacation ideas right now.  Sure, it’s cold out there.  Yes, as I write this snow is falling and has fallen on the ground and piled up at least an inch or so.  But, Chicago is also the home of blues legend Buddy Guy and his club called Buddy Guy’s Legends. 

Buddy has been around for a long time and has had his ups and downs.  These days he is definitely going through a kind of resurgence.  I first discovered him when he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and played on stage there and blew me through the back of my couch as I watched it on VH-1.  You have never seen a guy having such a blast playing his guitar as watching Buddy play.

I recently, just this past year, had someone hand me a copy of his CD “Sweet Tea.”  The tune “Oh Baby Please Don’t Leave Me” is one of my favorite songs of any genre.  If you want a tune that will remind you of Hendrix, you just need to listen to that one.  Of course, Buddy is not imitating Jimi, in fact Jimi cited Buddy as one of the biggest influences on his music. 

Buddy is doing what he has done the past few winters.  He is playing every weekend during a cold winter month at the beginning of the year at his club.  Essentially he is playing a show every Thursday through Sunday, throughout January.  There are exceptions, for example he does not play EVERY Thursday, but enough.  Check out his club’s website for the exact dates. 

This is a chance to see a living legend.  It’s a chance to see a man cited as an influence on Hendrix and Clapton and others.  John Mayer even cites him and played with him.  He is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and one of the best living guitar players you are ever likely to see. 

So, come to Chicago for a weekend here in January.  Check for tickets.  Go see Buddy live.  You won’t be disappointed and the snow and cold will be the last thing you end up remembering.
