Some Christmas Blues for your Sunday

Published by balaspa under blues, music, musicians, records Edit This

Well, there’s no getting around it now.  It is officially the holiday season.  It is time to start that annual ode to conspicuous consumption known as Christmas.  I am still in denial about all of it, but even I have to admit that it appears as though the Christmas season is upon us.  This means even I will have to go out and start shopping.  I hate that.

We know that there are a number of Christmas jazz tunes out there.  I know that from the jazz radio station where I volunteered back in college.  During this time of year, as the day grew closer, we had to play a certain amount of Christmas jazz tunes every hour.  It was a mighty chore and real pain in the butt and I have no idea if the jazz fans who listened to the station even appreciated it or not.  I know that when I worked at a classic rock radio station and the first year we went through a Christmas phase and had to play Christmas tunes the people sure got sick of it.  We sure did.

But what about the blues?  Sure there’s Blue Christmas, but I don’t consider that a real blues tune.  I want a real blues tune that encapsulates the Christmas season.  I know that this season causes a lot of people a lot of depression that has something to do with the season and something to do with just it being Christmas.  You would think that would cause a few people to write a few Christmas blues tunes

I found at least one.  This is a man named Charles Brown and, somehow, him being a real-life Charlie Brown during Christmas this seems even more appropriate.  I found this on, of course, YouTube.  The tune is…Christmas Blues.

My Pick Concert for Thanksgiving Weekend in Chicago

There appears to be a ton of concerts going on in Chicago this weekend for jazz and blues fans.  So much that, I feel, it would be impossible to see them all.  Of course, this is not a hard prediction to make since many are taking place at the same time and, unless you’ve learned how to divide into two people, it would be physically impossible for you to attend all of them.

Still, I have decided to pick one that I think you should really make an effort to attend.  To me, there is nothing cooler than a record company party.  I just think celebrating a major accomplishment  of a record company or band is a cool thing.  So, that is my pick for the show to check out this weekend.  Plus, it’s a blues show and nothing screams blues like the holidays, at least for me.

Special thanks to radio station WDCB and their website for the information below.

Jazz and Blues Show for November 28-30 here in Chicago

Well, the jazz and blues musicians may have taken the actual day of Thanksgiving off.  I don’t know what musicians who are on the road do on Thanksgiving.  Do they eat turkey?  Do they just sleep in like always?

The weather here in Chicago is not predicted to be very bad.  That’s a nice thing.  Between the insane shopping, I recommend checking out a cool jazz or blues show below.  In fact, it looks like a busy weekend once you get past Thanksgiving.

Some Jazz Shows for your Turkey Day

Happy Thanksgiving everyone.  This is my favorite holiday.  It is a day meant for sitting around and eating a lot of food and then sitting around some more watching football or falling asleep or both.  To me, nothing says holiday more than doing exactly those activities.  No decorations and no gift shopping or wrapping of presents or worrying about whether or not the gift you got is the right thing.

So, I hope you enjoy your Thanksgiving meal.  Whether you are eating the traditional staples of turkey or ham or perhaps enjoying a more unconventional meal such as sushi, just enjoy the fact you are with family and that you do have things to be thankful for.  I know, I know, things look rough out there and I am hardly a beacon of hope, but even I am hopeful about the future as of late and I think that has more than a little bit to do with the recent election we just went through.

The other good news is that after you slice up and eat your turkey there are a few jazz shows going on around town.  Sure, even the jazz musicians around the world seem to take the holiday off.  Despite this thanks to radio station WDCB I am able to present you with three stellar jazz shows at three stellar Chicago live jazz locations.

So, I hope all of you who come here often have a great Thanksgiving and a great weekend.  I will still be here all weekend long providing you with jazz and blues information.  I am currently looking for some blues-related  holiday music.  Stay tuned for that.

Some More Christmas Jazz

Published by balaspa under music, musicians, records Edit This

I know, it’s the week of Thanksgiving.  Trust me, if Thanksgiving was the main holiday at the end of the year instead of Christmas and there were hundreds of Thanksgiving songs, I would gladly post them on this particular blog.  As I have stated here before, for me, the real holiday has become Thanksgiving.  It’s about getting together, eating, spending time with family and either napping or watching football or both.  To me, this is the perfect holiday.

Since Christmas is the main holiday for this time of year that means there are seemingly endless numbers of Christmas tunes.  The thing is, you can’t find any of the jazz greats, besised Mel Torme and Judy Garland, doing their Christmas tunes on YouTube.  Sure, I could spend time looking elsewhere, but I am trying to relax this week.  In case you haven’t noticed, it’s a holiday.

There is a seemingly endless list of high school jazz ensembles playing Christmas jazz.  I find this very amusing.  All of these parents are being forced to attend various Christmas concerts at this time of year.  You know they really don’t want to be there.  They have to watch everyone else’s kid doing their thing before their kids come out.  Each band has to have its turn.

So, I found something that comes to us from the UK.  I have no clue what band this is but the little blurb to the right of the video on YouTube claims it is from some jazz CD called “Christmas Jazz” that you can order online.  I just know I listened to it this morning and found it Christmas-y and not half bad.

So, Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays and Bah-Humbug.

Published by balaspa under music, musicians, records Edit This

Charlie Brown and a Jazz Classic

Published by balaspa under music, musicians, records Edit This

Even if you are new to jazz and claim you know nothing about it, I am willing to bet there are a number of jazz classics that your probably didn’t even know were jazz classics.  Yesterday I mentioned the Dave Brubeck classic “Take Five.”  More than likely you have heard that music in a movie or on a commercial.

Did you know that Charlie Brown is part of a jazz classic?  If you have watched the “A Charlie Brown Christmas” every year you have heard and probably hummed or danced along with a tune that has become a jazz classic.  The tune is actually called “Linus and Lucy” but you probably just think of it as “That Peanuts Song.”

A man named Vince Guaraldi created an album in 1964 called “Jazz Impressions of a Boy Named Charlie Brown.”  This is where “Linus and Lucy” first appeared.  It wasn’t until the next year, 1965, when the tune was used as a key piece of music for the “A Charlie Brown Christmas” that it truly became synonymous with Charlie Brown and his Peanuts friends.  Since then the tune has become a part of the Peanuts cannon and has been featured in nearly every other Peanuts special since.

These days you hear it in stores over their music system.  It’s been used in commercials.  Even the Weather Channel has used it as background music while giving the local forecast.  It has also be covered by many musicians since Guarabaldi and released several times.  Even the Dave Matthews Band has a version of it.

Below is from an anniversary CD released in 1989.  The version here is not the same one you hear on the show, but is performed by a more modern jazz legend named Dave Benoit.  It invokes a nice Christmas feel, which is nice since I am still trying to deal with the fact that it’s the Christmas season.

Being Cool with Dave Brubeck

I have had a number of conversations this weekend about how strange it is that the thing you are vesting the least amount of your interest in can sometimes be the thing that really makes you famous.  I have been writing a novel all this month and have been dedicating myself to having 50,000 words between November 1 - 30.  It has been liberating, but I have also been trying to keep up with this blog and write this little story I started writing weeks ago as a kind of toss-off sort of story.

It’s an experiment, really.  I wrote a piece of flash fiction a while back which means I told a story in under 700 words.  I wondered if I could put together a more complex story, with many characters, but keep each chapter under 700 words.  The result has been “The Day the Machines Stopped.”  To my surprised, it has garnered some of the biggest reaction from people of any fiction I have ever written.

It is much the same with the song Take Five by Dave Brubeck and his Quartet.  Dave and his band were putting together an album called “Time Out” that was all about doing songs in odd time signatures.  They wanted one piece to have a strong drum solo for their drummer.  It was not a tune they expected to do much with and it was done more as a courtesy to that musician than with any real expectations of the tune becoming a hit.  The result of that was the now-classic jazz tune “Take Five.”

Even if you don’t immediately know the name of Dave Brubeck, or the title of that album or song, when you listen to the tune I bet you will recognize it.  It’s the ultimate in cool.  It’s just perfect in so many ways.  It’s classic.

So, as we prepare for this holiday week, sit back and listen to some cool music.  This is Dave Brubeck and his guys doing a classic version of “Take Five.”

My Pick Concert for this Weekend November 22, 2008

There are a lot of freaking concerts and performances going on around Chicago this weekend.  It’s like every musician in the jazz and blues genre has to make a stop here in Chicago on their way to whatever city it is that they may actually be from before their Thanksgiving holiday.  I suppose if I look ahead, I may find that next weekend is just as booked.

So, if I had to pick one, I would pick the one you see outlined below.  I like that it is at the Velvet Lounge and I like the sound of the group and the people putting it together.  I got this information from the website for radio station WDCB and you should check them out and listen to them as often as possible.

Jazz and Blues Shows in Chicago November 21 - 23

I am functioning, as I write this, on just a few hours of sleep.  I would love to claim that I am doing this because I was out partying and hanging with drugged-out jazz musicians all night.  Sadly, it’s just because I suffer from insomnia.  I used to pride myself on being able to sleep anywhere and everywhere.  These days, though, I can’t sleep.

Thankfully, it is a very busy weekend for jazz and blues shows.  Everyone is coming to town for the Thanksgiving week or something.  So, I will let the shows speak for themselves.  Thanks goes out to the greatest radio station in the world WDCB in DuPage.
